This boy is Hugo and he's gorgeous. Hugo was literally plucked from death row and is now looking for a new home. Hugo comes into the category of big, daft, clumsy dogs. Although the photograph doesn't really show it Hugo is a big dog and because of this he is looking for a home that is used to living with and handling big, daft dogs. Hugo hasn't had much training in his previous life and so his new owners will have to start at the beginning with his training and be firm but fair with him. His parentage is thought to be Rottweiler GSD cross, he is approximately 2 years old and has been neutered.
This boy is Dandy. Dandy is thought to be a collie cross and as such he comes into the medium-sized dog bracket. As he is part collie his new owners will have to be able to spend a small amount of time each week grooming his coat as it it a medium length. Dandy is approximately 2 years old. He is currently a calm, quiet dog.
Meet Dizzy. This boy is one of the nice, laid back Staffies that find themselves in the rescue kennel. Dizzy has been neutered and is approximately 18 months old. Dizzy walks nicely on the lead and has no interest in any of the other dogs in the rescue kennel. Dizzy has had some basic training in his previous life as he will sit to command and give a paw in return for a treat. Dizzy is a tough looking dog who really just wants to be close and have a cuddle. Dizzy is dark brindle with a white chest.
This girl is Saffie. Saffie is a two year old, whippet - saluki cross female. During her life Saffie has lived in a house but has never been house-trained so her new family will have to be prepared to start at the beginning with her training. Saffie will not be homed to a family that has any other pets as she doesn't tolerate any other dogs, cats, any small furry creatures at all. Saffie might best be suited to a home where a working dog is desired.
Meet Harry. Harry is a 4 year old Spaniel Collie cross boy. Harry is looking for a home where his family will be able to give him all the exercise he needs to keep him as a happy well balanced dog. Harry appears to have had fleas with the resulting itchy patches becoming pink from where he's tried to relieve the itch by chewing - he was on his way to be de-flea-ed after his photo shoot.
This three year old girl is Rolex. Rolex is an Akita cross. Rolex was handed in to the kennel and her previous owners have said that she is ok with children and male dogs but not other females. She doesn't like cats either. Rolex appears to have had very little training in how to walk on a lead and her new family will have to be firm with her during her training. Due to her size she will be best in a home where her new family have experience of living with a Akita and where there are no small/young children.
This little girl is Sadie. Sadie is a small, crossbreed female who is in the region of 10 months old. Sadie is another dog that has arrived at the kennels with dose of fleas. Sadie currently has a thinning patch of hair on her backend and tail due to the fleas. Sadie was also off to be de-flea-ed after her photo call.
Meet Maxwell. Maxwell is a new arrival at the kennel who was finding the whole experience very strange. Maxwell is twelve months old and thought to be a Great Dane cross. Although the photograph doesn't show it he is a tall dog. Maxwell is micro-chipped and ok with children he also seems to be ok with cats. Due to his size Maxwell won't be homed where there are very small/young children.
This boy is Billy. Billy is neutered and about eleven months old and is finding the whole experience of being in the rescue kennel very strange. Billy is a German Shepherd cross who is initially wary of strangers but soon gets over his worries to come and sit close-by for a cuddle.
649 Meet Askit. Askit is a 5 year old neutered, Staffie girl. Askit has also been microchipped. She is a little on the chunky side and would benefit from some exercise to reduce her waistline slightly. Askit is another of the Staffies that find themselves in the rescue kennel that has a nice temperament she shows no aggression at all to any of the other dogs in the kennel.
Piper is a two year Bullmastiff bitch who came into foster care in South Yorkshire at the beginning of December. Piper was living with a busy mum, three children and another dog. Piper is a nice, small, Bullmastiff bitch who will need some firm but fair handling as during her short life she appears to have had very little if any training.
After being collected Piper had a stressful couple of hours which involved a trip to the vet who shaved her bottom and tail because she had sat in some paint which had been left for some days, once she’d been shaved she had some sore looking patches from where the paint had gone through her coat to her skin – the undercoat is growing back nicely now. She then met the two resident Bullmastiffs in her foster home and went out for a meeting and greeting walk followed by a bath, as she was a bit whiffy.
Piper is just over two years old and a little under weight as she’s weighing in at only 31.5kg. Piper is an entire bitch who will need to be spayed 10 weeks after coming into season. She is fully vaccinated until February 2009.
Piper’s positive points are that she’s a nice, little dog who just tries to please but, she’s not entirely sure how. Unfortunately, Piper has learned that bad behaviour gets attention and now it’s a case of getting her to un-learn the bad behaviour. She is house-trained. Once the household is in relaxed mode, she is happy to lie at the side of someone and just be close. She is terribly affectionate and already has a fan club of pensioners within the family.
Initially, when meeting new people she will sometimes stand back and she will bark at some men – there’s no pattern emerging to the men she doesn’t seem to like - generally a gravy bone gets her over any initial wariness though. She will duck at any sudden movements above her or at any sudden noises.
The negative side of Piper - she has bitten on two occasions in her previous home. The first time she was found to have a severe ear infection. The second time, some-one tried to take food away from her – she is getting to the point of waiting calmly for her food bowl to go down. Piper’s lack of training has resulted in her having very few social skills or particularly good manners when meeting other dogs when out walking. Piper had never owned a collar and once she became larger than a cute, cuddly pup she had rarely, if ever been out for a walk – she will stand and bark at dogs approaching us when we’re out for a walk although this is a contradiction in terms she barks but, not aggressively - she is currently walking nicely at the side of our younger Bullmastiff male. She is also getting used to being made to wait in line to either leave the house calmly before going for a walk or to wait for tidbits being handed out.
It seems that Piper hasn’t had anything to play with in the past so, if she gets a ball she wants to possess it and keep it – this is a work in progress getting her to relinquish the toy/ball without showing her teeth. She has already, got over wanting to possess the sweeping brush.
Piper is looking for a home where her new family have experience of living with and training Bullmastiffs and who will also be able to give her firm but fair handling and continue with her training. Although, she had been living with a young family, in my opinion she doesn’t have any positive associations with young children and would be better in a home either without children or with older children who will respect her.
Enquiries for Piper can be made on either the usual number for Rain Rescue 07946618011 or direct to her foster home on 01226790744.
