Happy New Year! A Great Start to 2016 for RAIN

Sorry it has been a while since we updated, it has been a busy festive season here at RAIN. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and would like to wish you a Happy New Year from all of here at RAIN. It is also the perfect opportunity to reflect on a rollercoaster of a year. Early in 2015 we lost Linda, our rehoming officer. She was very much the centre of the RAIN team and we feel her loss each day. She was an amazing lady who dedicated her life to animal welfare. Today would have been Linda’s birthday, her legacy lives on with money raised in her memory being used to improve our cattery, a place where Linda loved to spend time and a place she desperately wanted to make better for our rescues. We are hoping to be able to start work on the cattery come spring 2016. We must also say a huge thanks to PetPlan Charitable Trust who have also awarded us a grant towards making these improvements.

Throughtout 2015 we dealt with some saddening cases of neglect and cruelty. Rolo the Staffie X came into our care after being involved in a hit and run RTA. Sparrow an old, blind Bichon Frise was saved from the stray kennels where he had been thrown away by his previous owners. Mabel the Puggle also arrived, she was hugely popular and reminded us of the plight of bitches used to make money by overbreeding. In 2015 our vet bills were over £40,000 having given all the animals in our care the care and treatment they needed to get them ready for their forever homes.

We also held three wonderful fundraising events. July saw us take up our usual spot at the Rising Sun Inn Festival dog show, as always it was an amazing day that raised a wonderful amount for the dogs in our care. September saw our Annual Dog Show at Sheffield Manor Lodge raised over £2000! A Phenomenal amount and an amazing day where the support for our cause was truly overwhelming. Then in October we tried something a little different, an Evening Of Posh Frocks and Fashion at the Best Western. The night showcased some of the gorgeous dresses and garments that have been donated through our charity shops. We had wonderful prizes donated for the raffle and we raised another £2000! The next Posh Frocks is set for April 2016!

In 2015 we saved a total of 391 dogs and cats from crisis situations. Dogs due to be put to sleep in the stray kennels, cats and kittens abandoned on the streets as well as pets where owners had passed away or could no longer cope. 2 days into 2016 and we have already had two dog adoptions and saved 6 cats and secured them spaces in rescue.

We brought in the New Year with a sponsored Kennel Sleepover to raise money for kennel facility improvements. Again raising another £2000 towards the costs.

This year we are dreaming big in the hopes of securing the future of rescue here in South Yorkshire, there are no big rescues in this area just a few small groups like us working tirelessly to do all we can in one of the worst regions in the country for animal cruelty and abandonment. Here at RAIN we do not own our premises and we have no secure location to run our centre from, we want to be able to change that by purchasing a permanent centre where we can ensure we are able to keep help unwanted pets for many years to come. So look out for our appeal launch later in the year but in the meantime if you want to make a New Years Resolution to feel good about, why not set up a regular donation to RAIN. Just £3 a month will help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned dogs and cats. We receive no government or lottery funding and rely solely on the support of kind people like you to do our vital work. www.justgiving.com/rainrescue – choose monthly donation.

To everyone who has supported us over the last year Thank you and we hope you will continue to do so and join us in 2016 to see many more dogs and cats find their forever homes!
