Many people ask - just what do we do at Rain Rescue, so we put this down as what's happened over the last week or so - no doubt I have forgotten loads too.
Heard about a rottie that had been handed into one of the local council dog pounds. This big friendly boy was dumped just before the Easter holidays. He only had enough medication to last him just under a week. The pound already had 2 pedigree rotties in that nobody wanted - and 2 rottie crosses in. What hope was there for an epileptic rottie? The council staff asked if we could help him as he couldn't stay in there due to the medication he was on. We spent most of Easter Sunday trying to get him into somewhere - nobody would take him - they are all full of dumped rotties and couldn't take any more. Thankfully a lady emailed us who offered help. However, we had to get him almost 200 miles away.
One of volunteers offered to drive half the way over the Pennines with him, and another volunteer met him and took him onto his destination. By night time, he was in the new foster home awaiting a visit to the vet after Easter where we will have to pay for his consultation and treatment. Hopefully we will find a home for him soon.
Found a lovely new home for the puppy American Bulldog/staffy cross girl that we took out of Cliffe kennels and that had been tenderly cared for by Auntie Kay and Uncle Mark. Bobbie has gone to a lovely family and now has a big brother and mummy for company. The future now looks bright for Bobbie.

Auntie Kay went and picked up the very scared puppy that was in the pound that she called Boo (cos he scared), and took it home to be loved, cared for and brought back to trust people again. She will be looking for a new home for him soon. This involves endless chats with the new home, a home check, vet trips where necessary, and lots of tlc to care for her foster dog. Plus, it costs a box of Kleenex every time she lets one of them go to their new home, and only rewarded by saving the life of another one from a pound.

An old Yorkshire terrier with an infected eye was in the pound - it looked like he had cataracts and a very bad skin condition. Nobody would be buying him out. Plus, another little terrier was out of time. We phoned loads of rescues trying to find safe places for them, and thankfully we managed to find a lovely one to take them in. Again no doubt they will have a huge vet bill with the treatment for his eye and coat. The bills will be hundreds of pounds and then they will be looking for new homes.

Our dedicated volunteer Jane who goes upto Barnsley kennels - has been up and clicked away at all the dogs in there that are looking for homes this week. So many desperate dogs - abandoned when the weather is so cold. Jane writes brilliant write ups that make me laugh whenever she goes up.
Our two dedicated volunteers Helen and Adam went and clicked away at the DOGS AT SHEFFIELD pound that are also waiting for new homes - we are increasing the rehoming from both the council pounds - because these pictures are appearing on the web site.
One of our dedicated volunteers organised a sponsored walk for us at Rother Valley and raised lots of money - it was attended by some brilliant supporters of Rain Rescue - thank you all and thanks to your well behaved dogs.
Sent 20 dog coats out to 2 different dog pounds - all donated by generous volunteers.
Paid the kennel bill for the 3 staffies Humphrey, Lillie and Oscar that we had in boarding.
Found a new home for the Border Collie girl that we have had in foster.
We are recruiting a fund raising team - to hopefully bring in lots of ideas for how we can pay for all the vet treatment, transport costs and fuel bills.
Our web site has received almost 7000 hits this week - if only we got a pound for every time someone looked us up on the page.
We are always looking for ways to raise money and open to any suggestions people can think of
Bye for now The Rain Volunteers 29/3/08 |
