Charities in South Yorkshire today revealed the strain they are being put under by the scores of homeless pets in their care.

It comes after an RSPCA report identified South Yorkshire as one of the worst places in the country for abandoned animals.

These charming pooches are being looked after by Rotherham-based Rain Rescue – one of the charities inundated with unwanted cats and dogs.

Its dedicated staff and volunteers save hundreds of animals from untimely deaths every year by taking in strays from nearby pounds that have been picked up by local authorities.

Animals not claimed by an owner within a certain time frame can be put to sleep, regardless of their age or health.

Rain Rescue aims to give the vulnerable animals a second shot at happiness by rehabilitating and rehoming them – but concerned staff say the high volume of pets in need is taking its toll on the charity.

“The number of unwanted animals is growing year on year,” said Lauren Sanderson, fundraising administrator at Rain Rescue.

“We are currently at our capacity with dogs and cats. ”

The animals end up homeless through no fault of their own and can arrive at the centre in a bad way.

“We put details of all our animals looking for homes online and ask potential owners to fill in a rehoming form so we can match the right animals to the right people for higher success rates. Unfortunately certain breeds, such as Staffordshire Bull Terriers, are often overlooked and remain in care for long periods.

“They’ve got a bad reputation but Staffies in our care, such as George, Barnaby and Sparkle, are fantastic dogs with good temperaments.

“Huge vets bills are another concern for us, and some dogs like Freddy the puppy who arrived here with a severe skin condition, require a lot of treatment.”
